Rover Sitters vs Professional Pet Sitters: And the Experience Your Pet Has With Me
One question I hear fairly often from pet parents is:
“Is there really a difference between a Rover sitter and a professional pet sitter?”
The short answer is yes. The biggest difference usually comes down to how the sitter operates and the kind of experience your pet has while you’re away.
Understanding that difference can help pet parents choose the type of care that feels right for their home and their animals.
What Is a Rover Sitter?
Rover is an online platform that connects pet parents with people who offer pet care services. Many Rover sitters are wonderful people who genuinely love animals and enjoy helping families care for their pets.
Because Rover is a marketplace, sitters on the platform can vary quite a bit. Some sitters pet sit part-time, some are students, and some are animal lovers who are just getting started gaining experience. I am also on Rover as I see it as a marketing platform.
For many pet parents, platforms like Rover can be a convenient way to find someone quickly when they need help with pet care.
What Is a Professional Pet Sitter?
A professional pet sitter operates their own pet care business independently rather than through a marketplace platform.
Professional pet sitters often build their services around long-term client relationships and structured business practices. This can include things like business insurance, policies, scheduling systems, and established procedures for caring for pets.
Many professional pet sitters also require meet-and-greets before services begin so they can learn about each pet’s routine, personality, and needs.
When I started You Can Leave Petsitting Services, my goal was to create a reliable, thoughtful experience for pet parents while keeping pets comfortable in their own homes.
But just as important as the structure of the business is the experience your pet has during the visit itself.
What Kind of Experience Will Your Pet Have With Me?
When I’m caring for your pet, I try to think about things from their perspective.
What are they feeling while their family is away?
Are they bored? Curious? Playful? Just wanting some company?
My goal is always for pets to feel like they’re spending time with a trusted friend rather than simply waiting for their next meal or potty break.
Your Pet Gets My Full Attention
I’m an only child, and growing up my “sister” was a Sheltie mix named Olivia.
Because of that, I learned very early how to give animals my full attention. When I’m with a pet, I’m not sitting there scrolling on my phone waiting for the clock to run out.
I’m present.
If your dog wants to play, we play. If your cat wants to chat, we chat. If your pet just wants someone nearby while they nap, I’m happy to keep them company.
Every animal has their own personality, and one of my favorite parts of pet sitting is learning exactly who they are.
Mental Enrichment for Dogs
Dogs need more than just physical exercise. They also benefit from mental stimulation, which is why I keep a variety of cognitive treat toys and enrichment puzzles.
These toys encourage dogs to sniff, think, and problem-solve while earning treats. For many dogs, it becomes a fun little brain workout.
Some dogs solve the puzzles right away. Others study the challenge like tiny detectives before figuring it out. Either way, it keeps them engaged and entertained.
Movie Time for Birds
Birds are incredibly intelligent and curious animals, and many of the birds I care for actually enjoy watching television.
Over time I’ve noticed that certain movies with bright colors, music, and animated characters tend to capture their attention.
Some favorites include:
• Rio
• Coco
• Demon Slayer
• Happy Feet
It’s always fun to see how they react. Some birds watch quietly, some chirp back at the screen, and others get excited and start dancing along with the music.
Paying Attention to Your Pet’s Health
While spending time with pets, I also stay aware of their physical condition.
When appropriate, I’ll gently do a quick full-body check while petting them, feeling for anything unusual such as lumps, swelling, or areas that seem sensitive.
If I notice anything that feels different, I always let the pet parent know so they can decide whether they want to follow up with their veterinarian.
Sometimes small changes show up before owners notice them, and being attentive to those details can make a real difference.
Choosing What’s Right for Your Pet
Every pet and every family is different, and there isn’t one single solution that works for everyone.
Some pet parents prefer using a platform to find sitters quickly, while others prefer working directly with a professional pet sitter who runs their own business and builds long-term relationships with their clients.
The most important thing is finding someone you trust who will care for your pets with patience, attention, and kindness.
As a professional pet sitter in Austin, Texas, I feel incredibly grateful every time a pet parent trusts me with their home and their beloved animals.
After all, our pets aren’t just animals. They’re family.
And around here, I truly believe your friends are my friends.
